A few thoughts on Special Event signage
Because special events, a wedding or anniversary celebration, conference, golf tournament, weekly movie, or other activity, are infrequent and likely one-time, signs used to promote them are generally defined as a ‘changeable’ (vs. ‘permanent’) sign type. Messages can be displayed in different ways such as on paper or card inserts positioned in a sign holder or on a digital display. Here are a few things to think about when you’re deciding among the various options available:
What works best for the people the message is intended for?
Deciding who the sign’s message is for and what their needs are should be the first step in choosing an appropriate sign format. Demographics including age, language skills (or restrictions), mobility or health considerations, etc. can all affect the reader’s ability to ‘get the message’. For example, digital signs in a senior’s residence or Long Term Care can be frustrating for residents, many of whom may have to study or reread text in order to be able to understand it. The changing text on digital signs can also be hard to read and absorb in a ‘drive-by’ situation. On the other hand, the energy and movement of a digital display message may be eye-catching and have high impact when it’s used to announce special events to students in a high school lobby. The style of the typeface and size of type selected also need to be thought through. Pick type that’s too small or too illegible (think some of the more complicated scripts or gothic fonts, for example) and the message you can end up sending is “What?????”
How often will the signs be used? Are they going to be used for other purposes?
How often special event information is posted and whether there will be other ongoing uses for the sign holders can affect the choice between signs which are permanently attached and those which can be moved to different locations or put away for storage.
How easy will the signs be to update and maintain?
This includes the answers to questions such as: How easy will it be service and update the sign’s messages? What equipment and training will be needed to produce updates? Can your staff do this or will updates have to be produced off site or by special order? How durable is the sign or sign holder in terms of the quality of materials and any cleaning requirements?
What looks best - plain or fancy?
One final thought is that sign holders tend to give you the most flexibility when they’re minimal or neutral in appearance. This lets the sign fit in with a range of interior or exterior finishes and also lets the message, not the sign holder, do the talking. |
