Stairwell Signage
Established in 1977, Wm. Whiteley Limited designs and manufactures interior signage, including stairwell signage, wayfinding and sign systems for both existing facilities and new buildings. Over the past five years alone we have successfully completed well over 100 interior signage projects. Our clients include healthcare facilities (nursing homes, Long Term Care, and hospitals); colleges and universities; airports and transportation terminals; hotels and public buildings.
Building and Fire Code Regulations
Stairwell signage is mandated signage required in most public, commercial & institutional buildings in the interests of public safety and security. Stairwell signage must meet the terms of Building and Fire Codes as described in local legislation or regulations (i.e. provincial, state or municipal building or fire codes).
Specifications and Installation Issues
While specific requirements may vary depending somewhat on location, signage specifications generally include:
- Installation height (i.e. floor to bottom of the sign)
- Requirement for signs to appear on both sides of the door
- Contrast between text and background colour
- Tactile text with Grade 2 Braille
- Text including floor level & stairwell shaft indicator (usually an alpha character)
