Washroom and Restroom Signage
Established in 1977, Wm. Washroom / Restroom Signs – How they fit into a building’s wayfinding system
Wayfinding or sign systems specified for commercial or industrial buildings generally include the following four primary sign classifications:
- Directional (point the way to departments or services, etc.)
- Informational (hours of operation, departments or services available, etc.)
- Identification (company, department or individual’s names, washroom signs, etc.)
- Safety / Security (emergency procedures, heath alerts, etc.)
When a visitor or facility user has been successfully guided through a building using its wayfinding system, identification signs act to confirm that a particular location, person or service has indeed been found. In order for this navigation process to be successful, other supporting wayfinding elements – such as directional signage - must also be in place.
Presenting information in such a way that it’s obvious or intuitive is an important strategy in making visitors – or staff or residents, for that matter – both more self-sufficient and at the same time less stressed about their ability to navigate their way to the person or services they need.
Information concerning the location of washroom facilities should be readily available to any visitor arriving at a public building through the Informational and Directional signage provided.
Some things to consider in specifying Washroom / Restroom Signs
Compliance with Accessibility Standards
Public washroom / restroom signage needs to be designed and installed in such a way that it meets all of the relevant accessibility standards (ADA / ODA or other) including use of graphic symbols, size of graphics, colour contrast and mounting height.
Visibility
Washroom / restroom signs are normally mounted on the door itself or, if there is no door, immediately beside the washroom entrance. Depending on the physical layout of the building, visitors may also find perpendicular overhead signage helpful in locating washroom facilities.
Maintenance and Durability
The volume of traffic using public washroom facilities is generally high, making it important that these signs are tough, durable and easily cleaned and maintained by cleaning or facilities staff.
Appearance
Another important consideration is to select signage that relates appropriately in style and colour to the building’s interior finishes. As a general rule, the more neutral the signage, the better and more flexible choice it is.
Other General Washroom/ Restroom Sign Requirements
In addition to the “Washroom” signs themselves, there is often a need to post general information for washroom users (i.e. hand washing instructions, requests concerning the disposal of waste materials, etc.). Sign holders required for these purposes should be chosen with consideration to whether the sign’s contents will need to be changed or updated from time-to-time, whether holders need to be tamper-resistant, as well as overall aesthetic & maintenance considerations.
